Churches and cathedrals in
St Andrews and East Fife
St Andrews Cathedral was founded by
Bishop Arnold in the presence of Malcolm IV in 1160.
It was
consecrated in 1318 by Bishop Lamberton in the presence of King
Robert the Bruce. In use for three centuries, it suffered damage
by gale and fire, each time being repaired.
The reformation in
1560 heralded its final downfall. Neglect followed, with many of
its stones being used by local builders.
Free access all year
round: Apr through Sept 9.30am to 6.30pm, rest of year to

Balmerino Abbey founded in 1229 by King William the
Lion’s wife, Queen Ermengarde, who was buried here in 1233, in
front of the high altar. This location was probably chosen as it
was a ferry crossing point, on the pilgrimage route between St
Andrews and Arbroath. The buildings are undergoing stabilisation
work and can be viewed from the grounds which contain one of the
oldest chestnut trees in the country. Open all year. Signposted
off A92, south west from the Tay Bridge.

St Athernase Parish Church “The second finest piece of
Norman work in the whole of Great Britain”. Built in 1187 by a
Crusader, Saier de Quince. Much of the exterior, the arcades,
arches and great rounded apse remain as the masons left them
over 800 years ago.
This church attracts hundreds of visitors
every year; please remember it is in use by the parish and not
just an ancient monument. It receives no grants towards the
costly maintenance, so please leave donations.
Situated in Leuchars on the A919, NW of St
Andrews.
Blackfriars Chapel. The Dominican Friars were known as
Blackfriars from the colour of their habit. They probably came
to St Andrews in the 15th century, being attracted by the
foundation of the University.
Blackfriars suffered as a
consequence of John Knox preaching the sermon on the ejection of
the buyers and sellers from the Temple in 1559.
The surviving
ruined fragment is a side chapel of the original church and is
believed to date from 1525.
