and great houses where the well to do lived. Again these
will take you time to enjoy, many lavishly furnished with period
pieces. The gardens again are often worth a visit in their own
right, the combination of the buildings and gardens really make
for a great day out.
Falkland
Palace and Gardens. Dating from the 16th century, this was
the country retreat of the Stuart monarchs, including Mary,
Queen of Scots. The palace is famed for its Renaissance
architecture and beautiful gardens. Open 1 March to 31
October, Monday to Saturday 10 to 5pm. Sunday 1 to 5pm. Gift
Shop also open: 1 November to 23 December.

Kellie Castle and Garden (NTS) 14th
century castle with superb plaster ceilings, fine furniture and
mural by Phoebe Anna Traquair. Late Victorian garden with
old-fashioned roses and herbaceous borders. Tea room, plant
sales and shop. Open: 21 March to 31 October daily 1 to 5pm
(tearoom & shop open 12). Garden open all year, daily 9.30 to
